Ernesto Samper, liberal President of Colombia between 1994 and 1998 was appointed Friday to the job of Secretary General of UNASUR, a position vacant since August last year. His period will start nex August.
He, with the other UNASUR heads of state are in Brasilia in dialogue with the BRICS.
Uruguayan President José Mujica stated that Samper “has the experience and the ability to communicate with any President to make decisions.”
Samper is the second Colombian to hold the position after Maria Emma Mejia held it in 2011.
He is a strong advocate for the advancing of the peace process with both the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN).
President Maduro also announced the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) Summit will be held in Caracas on July 29.
