Ernesto Samper, secretary-general of of the Union of South American Nations, UNASUR, was asked how he viewed the possibility of Donald Trump becoming the next president of the United States and replied, "Like Godzilla coming to world politics."
When asked by AFP if “UNASUR has a reflection on this position?” he replied: “Of course. More than a reflection. We are terrified."
Samper, former president of Colombia, went on to say, "There is a book called 'The Ugly American.' I think that it sums up all of that. A return to the past, a hard and fast imperialism with a religious obsession. I think that it represents what is meanest about American politics."
The Colombian diplomat said he believes Trump represents the worst of the worst of the politicians in the United States.
He reiterated that the UNASUR is horrified by the possibility of Trump winning the Nov. 8 presidential elections.
“Trump represents every chapter in the book 'Ugly American,'” Samper insisted.
"The Ugly American" is a satirical look at the arrogance and incompetence of a U.S. diplomat during a military intervention in Southeast Asia.Samper is on an official trip to Europe, including the Vatican, where he met with Pope Francis. He will be in Brussels and Berlin on Wednesday. In France, he will participate in the launch of the Latin America and Caribbean Week forum.
