Newly-appointed Foreign Minister Samuel Moncada on Friday charged London with manipulating events related to poverty and hunger in La Guajira region, located on the border between Colombia and Venezuela

Through his Twitter account, Moncada denounced the statements given by British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Alan Duncan, who said that "Venezuela has led its own people to poverty."

"Minister Alan Duncan lies to the Parliament, accusing Venezuela of causing a famine when our actions have in fact saved thousands of lives," Moncada said.

On the Colombian side of the border, at least 64 children died of malnutrition in 2016. Social organizations in the department demanded action from the government of President Juan Manuel Santos to protect the Wayuu Indigenous community that lives in the area.

Moncada said the actions and social programs created by the government of Venezuela have saved thousands of lives in the area. He said Duncan's statements were a manipulation of the situation.

Moncada emphasized that the social policies implemented by the government in La Guajira have been in place for years, adding that "the British government pretends to ignore it to justify its aggression against Venezuela."
