President Vladimir Putin has not spoken publicly on the matter, but Russian government officials have condemned Trump's decision to withdraw.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin agreed during a Thursday telephone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the United States was wrong to withdraw from the international nuclear accord with Iran, a Turkish government source told Reuters.

Another source familiar with the conversation also confirmed to Sputnik that both leaders had agreed the JCPOA (the formal name for the nuclear deal) is "a diplomatic success that must be safeguarded."

Putin has not spoken publicly on the matter, but various Russian government officials have condemned the decision. Putin also held a meeting with Russia's Security Council, where he and the council reportedly "expressed deep concern over such a decision and again emphasized the importance of this (nuclear deal) document," according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Thursday, also during a phone conversation with Erdogan, that Europe and the other participating countries should clearly define their stances to salvage the deal.

U.S. President Donald Trump, making good on an old campaign promise, decided to withdraw from the landmark diplomatic agreement, which had lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for the supervised dismantling of nuclear technology development.

International supervising agencies have said that Iran is in full compliance with the deal, but Trump's administration repeatedly said Iran was breaking the "spirit" of the agreement.

On Tuesday, Trump announced he would be reimposing sanctions on Iran, which Iran pointed out are illegal and against United Nations Security Council resolutions.
