The Palestine Ministry of Education in Gaza held a protest Monday demanding the reconstruction of schools damaged by Israel during its 2014 assault.
Education ministry officials, human rights activists and students participated in the action, which was organized as a reaction to continuous delays in the rebuilding of the schools.
According to the Ministry of Education in Gaza, 244 schools were destroyed by Israel during the 51-day war. Symbolically, the ministry organized the sit-in protest on the ruins of the Jamal Abdel Nasser school in Gaza.
Mohamed Siyam, Director of the Ministry of Higher Education, urged the international community to use every effort to accelerate the reconstruction of the damaged schools.
“This is a clear message to the international community ...that we are facing a real problem due to lack of schools. The world should intervene to solve this problem, to lift the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip and to take part in rebuilding new schools for our students," he said
