As Nepal is at the polls to elect a new President for the country, incumbent President Bidhya Devi Bhandari looks poised to win a second term.
More than 330 lawmakers from the Federal Parliament and 550 lawmakers from the Provincial Council are eligible to vote. The polls opened at 10:00 a.m. and will close at 3:00 p.m.
“We have made the arrangements to count the votes after the voting concludes... the results will be out by the evening,” the Election Commission’s spokesperson, Nawaraj Dhakal, told ANI in an interview.
Preliminary analysts project Bhandari to win with an overwhelming majority. If the predictions hold up, she will be the first president of Federal Nepal. The Federal parliament was formed after the completion of House of Representatives and Province Assembly elections in December.
Bhandari is the first female president of Nepal. The early prediction shows the president on course to be re-elected with an overwhelming majority.
There are also 59 members of the National Assembly who can vote, minus three nominees of the National Assembly whose appointments have been challenged at the Supreme Court. A total of 549 lawmakers from the Provincial Council will vote to elect the new president.
Election Commission's spokesperson Nawaraj Dhakal says the results are expected late Tuesday.
