Allies of Milagro Sala say that her arrest is a politically-motivated campaign to tarnish her public image.

Today, the Argentine Supreme Court denied the request of the Association of State Workers for its intercession in the case against Milagro Sala, one of the group's leaders, who is also a representative of Parlasur, the decision-making body of Mercosur, a regional trade block in Latin America, Pagina 12 reports.

Sala is a progressive indigenous leader who was arrested in January of this year.

The right-wing government of Mauricio Macri accused Milagro Sala of stealing funds destined for cooperatives related to her group in the Jujuy province, where ASW is headquartered.

ASW says these allegations are baseless, and that the Argentine justice system lacks independence, and that the local government of Jujuy is guilty of fraud.

Sala's lawyers and other leaders in the ASW say that her arrest was politically motivated, and that the Parlasur deputy is the victim of a political campaign aimed at harming her public image.
