Catalan citizens and residents are protesting the Spanish government, demanding that they be allowed to vote in an independence referendum on Oct. 1.

Recent polls by the Catalan government showed that while only half of citizens preferred to leave the Spanish union, 70 percent want the opportunity to vote.

Thousands of students and citizens are marching through Barcelona’s main avenues, plazas and the University of Barcelona, shouting “we will vote” and holding giant Catalan flags into the air.
