Palestinian human rights activists demanded Wednesday that Oscar nominees refuse to accept Israeli travel vouchers included in a gift bag worth tens of thousands of dollars.
The travel vouchers are part of a broader propaganda campaign to whitewash Israeli human rights abuses, according to Omar Barghouti from the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee.
Barghouti said, “Israel is desperately trying to fight its increasing international isolation through bribes and intimidation rather than by ending its occupation and apartheid.”
“There are no 'Hunger Games' in Gaza but there is real hunger, and it is induced by years of Israeli occupation and siege,” he said.

A total of 26 Oscar nominees are set to receive gift bags worth US$230,000. Along with gifts including a trip to Japan and thousands of dollars worth of cosmetics, the bag also includes a 10-day trip to Israel donated by the country's tourism ministry.
An Israeli tourism spokesperson told The Times of Israel the handouts could be a “very powerful marketing tool.”
“The ministry invests serious money for top VIP treatment for celebrities because there is very favorable publicity that comes from that,” the spokesperson said.
However, Barghouti said some of the sights included in the tours aren't Israeli at all.
“The proposed tour sets out to create the impression that occupied East Jerusalem, including the Old City, is part of Israel despite the fact that the U.N., including the U.S., recognizes it as occupied Palestinian territory,” he said.
“This comes at a time when Israel is accelerating its ethnic cleansing and killing of Palestinians in Jerusalem and entrenching its colonialism and apartheid policies,” he added.
