The far-right party benefits from anti-refugee sentiments and increased calls for security after the Paris terror attacks, according to analysts.

As the French electorate prepares to cast its vote in the first round of the regional elections Sunday, the far-right National Front, or FN, gained four more points since the Paris terror attacks, according to the latest poll released Saturday, obtaining an alarming 30 percent of the votes – compared to the 21 percent in the departmental elections earlier in March.

Former President Nicolas Sarkozy's coalition, the right-wing The Republicans, known as the LR, and the UDI centrists, came second, with 29 percent of the vote, according to the survey carried out by Odoxa for various local media outlets.

The governing PS socialist party obtained 22 percent of the votes, remaining in third position.

The rest is split between left-wing parties the environmentalists EELV and the Left Front coalition, which together may manage to pull in 11.5 percent.

Many political analysts stressed the impact the Paris terror attacks could have on voters’ opinions. They believe that while the attacks contributed to raise the popularity of the three main parties, the far right has especially benefited.

Another factor was the fact that the social democrat government of Francois Hollande has been losing more and more support among the population for failing to solve the issue of high unemployment rates while implementing measures of economic austerity (i.e. restrictions on public spending).

The regional runoff is due Dec. 13; in the next elections in 2017, the French will be electing their new president.
