Protests for Guatemalan Girls Killed in Fire

IN PICTURES: People across Latin America are outraged by the tragic death of 40 girls in a shelter for adolescents.

Protests were held across Latin America to demand justice for the girls who died after a fire broke out in the government shelter Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asunción.

At least 40 girls died in the tragedy which protesters argue was a gross act of state negligence. According to recent witness accounts, the national police refused to rescue the victim with survivors recounting that they were locked in rooms and left to die.

The protests, which come on the one-week anniversary of the tragedy, say the government must be held accountable for the tragic deaths.
