Mexican Reporters Protest Murder of Journalist Javier Valdez

IN PICTURES: Journalists took to the streets in Mexico City to protest against the spiraling death toll of journalists in the country.

The murder of renowned Mexican reporter Juan Valdez has sparked widespread outrage with protesters taking to the streets Tuesday to demand an end to the violence and impunity.

Valdez, a correspondent covering the drug-related violence and crime beat in the state of Sinaloa for Mexico's largest daily newspaper, La Jornada, was shot dead Monday in Sinaloa's capital of Culiacan. His death was followed by an attack on Sonia Cordova, deputy director of El Costeño and her 26-year-old son, Hector Jonathan, who died in the assault.

According to a recent report by Article 19, a press freedom organization, 2016 was the most deadly year for the press in Mexico in the past decade with 11 journalists murdered and more than 400 attacks on media workers.
