Ted Cruz's outlandish statements on foreign policy, "Obamacare" and gun control suggest Republicans may want to think twice before nominating him for the Oval Office.
As panic sets in that Donald Trump will become the Republican Party's nominee for president, Ted Cruz is being pushed as a moderate alternative. He's not. Cruz has repeated been called out many times for his hardline, outlandish comments and his regular lying.
IN DEPTH: War for the White House 2016
Of his lies, the Pulitzer Prize-winning website Politifact has been keeping track. Here are five topics Cruz clearly knows nothing about - or is lying about.
Obamacare
The Lie
"(Obamacare) is the biggest job-killer in this country. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, have been forced into part-time work, have lost their health insurance, have lost their doctors, have seen their premiums skyrocket."
The Truth
The number of jobs have gone up and the number of unwilling part-timers has gone down. The majority of Americans already have insurance and Obamacare has had little impact on their premiums.
Violent Criminals Are Democrats
The Lie
"Here’s the simple and undeniable fact: the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats."
The Truth
Pretty deniable. The Cruz campaign's evidence was a study that looked at former offenders' party membership in three states only. Politifact also critiques that it’s hard to draw a line between cause and effect.
Iran Nuclear Deal
The Lie
"This deal trusts the Iranians to inspect themselves. Let me repeat that: This deal trusts the Iranians to inspect themself."
"The Iran Deal will facilitate and accelerate the nation of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons"
The Truth
Experts call Cruz's logic "bizarre" and "astounding." Matthew Bunn, a nuclear specialist at the Harvard Kennedy School says, "The terms of the deal ... would slow and impede any nuclear weapons effort, not facilitate and accelerate it."
Cruz didn’t offer nor did Politifact find evidence the overall agreement trusts Iranians to inspect themselves.
Equal Pay
The Lie
"Under Barack Obama and the big government economy, the median wage for women has dropped $733."
The Truth
"That's wrong. Wages actually have risen for women since Obama took office. Cruz's spokesperson said Cruz intended to use a different phrase."
Gun Control
The Lie
"If you look at the jurisdictions with the strictest gun control laws, almost without exception, they have the highest crime rates and the highest murder rates."
The Truth
This point might hold for some places, Politifact writes, but there are multiple exceptions among cities, states and nations.
